The Sunday morning congregations in Ballyscullion, Bellaghy, and Greenlough were all saddened by the news of the death on Saturday evening, 26 October, of Fr Liam Donnelly, aged 85. Fr Liam had celebrated the 60th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood in June of this year, and had been helping out regularly in the churches of our parishes for a number of years, having served in the parish of Bellaghy/Ballyscullion from 1977-1981. A native of the parish of Lavey, he spent his retirement in the house where he had been born and raised.
Fr Liam will be missed by all those who knew him, those who benefitted from his long and fruitful priestly ministry, his colleagues, and many friends. His death will be a great loss to his last surviving sibling, Mrs Philomena Fullan, to his entire family circle to whom he was very close and dear, and to his housekeeper, Orla. We offer them our deepest sympathy.
He will be remembered in these parishes for his lively sense of humour, his short but meaningful homilies, for his friendly waves, and charming smile.
